Our contract is up with PCCW, and we are looking at other options given their poor customer service. Is anyone using HKBN? I gather they now have coverage at CC with decent speeds. Would welcome any feedback. Cheers

Hi there, HKBN has a better speed, but the customer service is very poor (worse than PCCW)! So if you want the speed go for HKBN, for the customer service keep PCCW.

Thanks very much for your feedback. HKBN had a a promo offer in the clubhouse over the weekend, so we have signed up. Will let you know what the service is like once we have it up and running in August!!

Sorry to sound stupid but is HKBN the same as HGC (Hutchison's) ? I have HGC and the speed is excellent and I have a strong signal here in Tower 15.

No a different company - Hong Kong Broadband Network. The deal on offer is 100Mbps for a monthly fee of $169, with 5 month service fee waiver + $300 wellcome gift vouchers. 24 month contract. We signed up for 1000Mbps for a monthly fee of $199 with 5 month service fee waiver, for 24 months. Do note though that there is a $1200 prepayment fee which is refunded over 6 months (the person we signed up with failed to tell us that!). They do also have phone and cable tv packages, but we are locked into PCCW/Now at present. Our connection is due to be set up this Saturday so I will post an update to let you know how we get on. Details are at apply.hkbn.net or ph 3566 8868. You can also check the network coverage for your particular tower on their website (we are in tower 6).

Aec, it will great to know what speed you actually get!!!
Mind you, one problem will be that many websites can not feed downloads at such a fast speed - so your experience will be essential knowledge.
What do you plan to use it for mostly?
Please do let us know.
Thanks

AEC - These companies always fail to talk about the pre-payment. I was going to sign up with icable to get some of the local channels and they wrote up the contract and said there is no pre-payment and then they told me just before I signed that I would have to pay $900 HK up front. I ripped up the contract and told them to go to hell. Not that it was so expensive, but on principal alone. I don't like people being dishonest to make the sale. I will order American cable which comes through the internet from a company called Nation Phone. A bit expensive but that is what I want.

@AEC - How is HKBN for internet so far ? Just curious since I'm having major problems with HGC.My wireless works OK for me at times but other people cannot hook-up. They have sent out the same dumb technician every time even though I requested a different technician. I want to switch but wondering if HKBN is any good.

that sounds like a funny problem - is that wifi router supplied by HGC? how many connections is it supposed to allow, what kind of settings are there. it's unlikely the technician is dumb, he just follows his job orders.

They supplied their own router and we should be able to hook-up at least 4 people. We couldn't even hook-up two people. There was definitely something wrong with the wifi. the service started out nicely for the first two weeks and from there it went downhill.

HGC Update - The one really frustrating thing about HK is with their customer service people. They just listen and repeat the same thing over and over again and never resolve any issues. I finally received a call from HGC customer service regarding my wifi service and she said I can't cancel the contract. I told her I was not going to honor a contract where they have not fulfilled their end of the bargain. I have had this service a little over a month and the wifi broke down 4 times. The last two times I asked for a different technician and they sent the same guy who could not deal with the problem. The woman finally offered to send a senior technician and I refused because I know they will waste my time and send the same guy out again. She would not listen and kept repeating "you cannot cancel the contract". Is there a better business bureau I can report them to here in HK? Who monitors these damn companies anyway with their shoddy business practices. This is just not fair that customers have to pay for bad service or service that is not given at all. They have my HKID number but do not have my credit card number and I refuse to pay for their service and will disconnect their modem myself. If they want to take me to court then so be it but I will not back off from these damn crooks.

what contract have you signed up for? are you talking 4 outages in the first month as in the wifi went dead, or your visitors could not connect? or did your internet get disconnected totally for a good while?

Actually 4 wifi outages the first month. I cannot connect on mine either. Wifi does not show up at all. Today I had HKBN come in and the guy could not find the box for some reason. I'm wondering if HGC has blocked their competitors from installing service. HGC wants me to honor the contract but I will not pay them a dime. The customer service manager finally offered to send out a senior technician which is what I asked for in the past and my request was ignored.
